Going Over Homework

Standard

by Dr. Charice Hayes, CEO

Over the past few years, we have been asked by potential clients and clients for our tutors to go over homework. Our response to that is that we don’t go over homework, but we provide homework assistance/help. Let’s explain.

-Going over homework does not instill skills for autonomy.

-To promote autonomy, we promote and use effective research-based modeling.

-Once a client displays independence with that skill, he/she will be comfortable with doing his/her own homework assignment.

All of our tutors are trained in research-based techniques. We are in the business of not only improving content/skill level and grades, but character too.

2017 Year in Review

Standard

by Dr. Charice Hayes, CEO

It has been a joyous 2017. All 4 One Tutoring continues to make strides. In last year’s review, I stated that we have put some things in place to diversify and expand our company and services, and we began to reap the fruits of those seeds.

Contracts/Partnerships

In March of 2017, we secured a contract with Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). We are very elated to have this contract. Recently, we have submitted a proposal to secure another contract with MSDE. We are executing our current contract so well that we are optimistic that we will keep securing contracts.

In June of 2017, we obtained a business-to-business (B2B) partnership with SD Solutions. They help support us with e-learning. We look forward to a lengthy partnership.

Once again, we were able to hire tutors and instructors for our local face-to-face tutoring and our after-school program at the Empowerment Academy . This month, we have once again started the process of hiring an administrative assistant/marketing intern . We are looking forward to bringing more staff on-board the first 3 months of 2018.

Office Home

Last year (it was mentioned in our 2016 year in review), we closed one of our offices due to space and location. We are still looking for a larger center/office to call home. Over the past few months, we have been looking at buildings. We still have office space at The Empowerment Academy.

Afterschool Program

Our after-school program, at the Empowerment Academy , continues to get praises by administrators, community leaders, and parents. Even though we have lost a few of our loyal families and students for the 2017-2018 school year due to graduating and/or transfers, we continue with our project-driven instruction, STEM projects, and arts.

Workshops/Seminars

On the behalf of All 4 One Tutoring and All 4 One Learning Solutions, I was able to participate in a 3-day research seminar at Georgia State University via the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) and Educational Testing Service (ETS). I was amongst some leaders in research. We came together to not only familiarize ourselves with the Program the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) and its databases but to be on the path to help solve problems or close gaps in cognitive and workplace skills needed for successful participation in 21st-century society and the global economy. Since I am an employer, I wanted to use the database to acquire knowledge and begin research on average literacy skills of adults within two age groups. Hopefully this research becomes into fruition in 2018.

Mayor’s Office

I was elated and honored for All 4 One Tutoring to be approached by the Baltimore Mayor’s Office to participate in a well overdue employment event entitled Work Baltimore. This month long event was initiated to serve the City of Baltimore’s citizens and stimulate the City’s economic growth. Unfortunately, due to previous commitments, we were unable to participate in the seminars and workshops. However, we are very grateful for the opportunity. Hopefully, we will get another opportunity in the future.

First On-Demand Course

All 4 One Tutoring debuted its first on-demand Spanish I course in July. The course uses vocabulary and language structure through a series of activities designed for realistic communication. You achieve listening, reading, speaking, and writing language skills. You will develop an understanding of the Spanish language and culture.

Doing Business As (DBA)

In the last quarter of this year, we acquired a trade name (All 4 One Learning Solutions) with Maryland’s Department of Assessments and Taxation. All 4 One Learning Solutions has a different focus and operation than All 4 One Tutoring. The focus is solving problems with innovation. We look forward to what this new venture will bring in the future.

Accounting

For the fifth year in a row, All 4 One Tutoring‘s income and net profit has increased. We just celebrated our sixth year in operation in October. Our income has increased 30% this year from 2016 (a slight decrease from 2015’s report), and our net profit has increased 26% (a slight decrease from 2015’s report). What we have planned for 2018, we hope to keep this trend ascending.

What’s Next

Being the owner of such a blossoming, rewarding, and empowering organization is such an honor. We are proof that when we work together to achieve a shared goal, we can expand quality services so that everyone can be autonomous in positive social change. What we have planned for 2018 is:

  • to expand to the state of Georgia.
  • to develop more on-demand courses.
  • to begin a company book project.
  • to develop more partnerships.
  • to find our office home.

Special Thanks

I would like to give a special thank you to those who have contributed blog posts this year. Laura Pearson has been a huge help with contributing wonderful informative and innovative content. We will continue to open our doors for guest bloggers in 2018.

See you prosper in 2018!!

What Are You Going to Do Winter Break?

Standard

by Dr. Charice Hayes, CEO

I’d thought that I should contribute/write the last couple of blog posts of 2017. It’s been an exciting and yet another progressive year for All 4 One Tutoring. I will write about that in our last post of 2017 next week.

Right now, a lot of students (whether college or school-aged) are on winter break. Parents, I’m sure that you have some wonderful activities planned for your child(ren). 🙂 College students, I’m certain that you’re excited about starting the next semester on your journey of earning your college degree in addition to getting a little rest after taking finals. 😌 I’d like to give you some ideas and things you can do over the winter break that will be fun but still incorporate learning.

Well, I think that one of the most important things you can do over the winter break is visit your local public library.

Yes, you can read books there and check audios, books, and DVDs out. However, most public libraries have scheduled engaging activities each month. Some libraries have activities for specific age groups.

I know it’s the holiday season and the malls and stores will have GREAT after Christmas sales. However, use your mall and store trips as a real-life learning experience. Parents of school-aged children, you can create math/story problems in your shopping experience. College students you can create/do something as well. Here are a few examples:

1. Macy’s has a Ralph Lauren shirt on sale for $19.99. You look at the price tag and the shirt was originally $49.99. What is the percent of decrease in the cost of the shirt? (This problem is typically geared toward middle-schoolers.)

2. Macy’s has a Ralph Lauren shirt on sale for $19.99. You look at the price tag and the shirt was originally $49.99. How much money will you save? (This problem is typically geared toward elementary students.)

3. Macy’s is one of your favorite stores, and you want to know why customers buy the things they do. You can research shopping behaviors and understand how products are priced. (This is typically geared toward college students who are majoring in business administration, marketing, fashion merchandising.)

Now, you’ve received all of these nice things for Christmas, and you have to make room for them. You may be getting ready to bring in the new year and want to clean your closet and drawers out. Winter break may be the perfect time to do so. While you’re cleaning out your closets and drawers, think about donating your unwanted items to a charity.

Usually around the holidays and winter break, I see a lot of people at the movie theater. Well why not use this activity as a learning experience? Parents of school-aged children, you can have your child(ren) discuss/write about the setting, the plot, the characters, and what he/she enjoyed the most about the movie.

I know a lot of you have, will receive, or give video game consoles for Christmas. Yes, some of the games are educational and engaging (e.g. Minecraft). However, why not spark some interest in creating your own video game and/or app? This would be an awesome thing to start to think about and begin the planning stages on winter break.

I hope that I’ve really sparked your interest in doing some, if not all, of these activities. You can even take the ideas I’ve given you and cater them to your liking.

by Charice Wofford CEO

What a great year All 4 One Tutoring has had. In our second year of operation, we serviced over 100 clients. This has increased from from the 65 clients we serviced during our first year of operation.

How Do You Learn Best? “In teaching others, we teach ourselves.” ~ Latin Proverb

Standard

by Charice Wofford, CEO

One of the tutors at All 4 One Tutoring told me that during a session with one of our clients he asked the client, “What helps you to retain information/skills the best?” The client, who is a young college student in Poland, stated that he learns best by showing or teaching others what he has learned or gained so far. I thought this was great and profound, because I do believe that by teaching others you teach yourself.

A few months ago, when I spoke to a student in one of my Spanish classes at a private university I teach at, he told me that by helping his son with his Spanish, helped him. These shared stories reminds me of a Latin proverb:
